Hey AG, this is me trying to avoid explaining how do play deathknights in game. Not that i dont enjoy taklin to you guys, but it is rather time consuming.
I guess the first thing to address is spec. Deathknights can dps, and do it well with many different talent builds, this post however will focus on unholy dps, as thats what i prefer to play, and get asked about.
This is the spec that i play with as well as most other unholy deathknights, give or take a few points. The strength of this spec is that it is not really gear dependent since you can do a large portion of your damage from diseases. That said, it also scales very well when you start getting better gear.
Glyphs:
Glyph of the Ghoul: this gives your ghoul an additional 40% of your strength and stamina, so combined with Ravenous Dead, your ghoul has just as much strength and stamina as you do.
Glyph of Disease: this refreshes the duration of your diseases on your primary target as well as all other targets in range of your pestilence. I use this because at the end of my rotation when its time to refresh diseases its much easier to use 1 blood rune(pestilence) than to use 1 blood rune, 1 frost rune, and 1 unholy rune. It also frees up runes for scourge strike.
Glyph of Death and Decay: this increases the damage of your death and decay spell by 20%. I found it a large dps boost for me, since i generally cast it on pulls of 3 or more mobs.
Minor Glyphs: these are pretty standard for all specs, so i wont go into detail on them Glyph of Horn of Winter Glyph of Pestilence Glyph of Raise Dead
Rotation:
Now that we have a talent build and glyphs all worked out its time to talk about how to actually do damage. Before getting into combat rotation its important to buff yourself as much as possible, first and most obvious is Blood Presence, 15% damage boost is a must, this spec has no use for the faster GCD of unholy presence, and you only dps in frost spec if a) tank dies or b) you like repair bills. Before a fight get your Boneshield, the 2% damage boost is nice. When casting try and do it so that you will have time for your unholy rune to refresh before the fight. Next you will want Horn of Winter up, the best time to cast that is just before a pull so that u can retain the 10 runic power it generates.
There's no 1 rotation to use in every situation, so i'll cover the 3 i use.
Single Target(boss fights and single pulls): Opening: PS, IT, BS, BS, SS, SS, SS All other cooldowns: Pestilence, BS, SS, SS, SS in this rotation there will be some downtime when no runes are active. On a boss fight you want to get up Gargoyle and Unholy Blight during this time. On other mobs use Unholy Blight and Deathcoil.
2-3 mob pulls: First Rotation: PS, IT, Pestilence, BS, SS, SS, SS All others: Pestilence, BS, SS, SS, SS Runic power will be dumped the same as above, excluding the use of gargoyle.
3 or more mobs(AOE rotation): First Rotation: DnD, PS, IT, Pestilence, Unholy Blight All Others: Pestilence, BS, SS, SS, SS Use Runic power to keep up Unholy Blight, and cast deathcoil when available. This rotation puts you in danger of pulling aggro at the start of a fight if your tank doesn't have good AOE threat, if thats the case when you start cast PS, IT, Pestilence before DnD.
If you follow this you will be able to play a carbon copy of my DK, hope it helps. Enjoy Carlton
